Overview

The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is our most popular course. It will teach you about the key grape varieties grown around the world and the different styles of wine produced. It will also introduce the Systematic Approach to Wine Tasting which will be followed when tasting each wine.

This course is an ideal introduction to the world of international wines and wine law and is suitable for beginners as well as people who have already studied other wine courses.


Who it is aimed at:

  • Wine enthusiasts who wish to acquire in-depth knowledge of wines and want to obtain an internationally recognised wine qualification.

  • People employed in the drinks and hospitality industries with little previous knowledge of alcoholic beverages in particular international wines.

  • People wishing to pursue a career as a sommelier and who want to learn more about international wines and wine styles before going onto accredited Sommelier qualifications.

The Course:
Level 2 comprises of 18 hours of face to face teaching across three days, with an exam to follow at the end of the last day.

The course runs across three days, starting at 10am and concluding at 6pm.

Introduction to Wine Tasting, Pairing, Storage & Service

  • Learn to taste and describe wines using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting ®.

  • Discover the key considerations when pairing food and wine successfully.

  • Learn the processes and principles of wine storage and service.

Factors Affecting Wine Style & Quality

  • Learn how the environmental and winemaking factors influence the style and quality of the wine.

  • Learn the meaning of labelling terms related to vine age and grape-growing options.

Still Red Wine

  • Learn how the environmental and winemaking factors influence the principal and regionally important black grape varieties, how they influence the style and quality of the wines produced.

  • Learn the meaning of labelling terms indicating style and quality.

Still White Wine.

  • Learn how the environmental and winemaking factors influence the principal and regionally important white grape varieties, how they influence the style and quality of the wines produced.

Exam

You have one hour to complete the exam which comprises 50 multi-choice questions and a pass mark of 55%.

Below are the results you can attend and the marks required.

  • Pass with Distinction 85% and above

  • Pass with Merit Between 70% and 84%

  • Pass Between 55% and 69%

  • Fail Between 45% and 54%

  • Fail unclassified 44% and below

As with every WSET exam around the world, the exam papers are sent to WSET in London, UK to be marked to ensure global continuity with the results.

Results are normally known up to 3 weeks later, however with the current working restrictions in the UK due to Covid-19, results can take up to 6 weeks at present. WSET inform us by email and as soon as we know we will inform you by email. The certificate and metal lapel pin for successful candidates will follow from London shortly afterwards.

If you are unsuccessful, you are able to retake the exam without having to retake the course if you do not wish to. The cost to resit the exam is currently 650 AED. Please contact us for potential dates.
